Modern Magic
- Author/Editor: Professor Hoffmann (Angelo Lewis)
- Publisher: London: George Routledge and Sons
- Date: 1876
- Condition: good
First edition, first binding state. Red cloth elaborately stamped in black and gilt. Engraved frontispiece behind tissue. Publisher's device on title page. Profusion of illustrations. 511pp. Thick 8vo. General shelfwear, spotting, and rubbing, spine chipped at head but nearly repaired with matching cloth. Considered by many to be the most important work in the modern conjuring cannon, and the first truly 'modern' work on the secrets of magic. This, the true first edition of Hoffmann's great book, is one of only 1000 copies printed in the first edition, which sold so well as to require many subsequent printings almost instantly upon the book's initial publication and for nearly a century thereafter. "Modern Magic" is truly the foundation of contemporary conjuring literature, and this example is a sturdy and handsome example.
